Phil has been teaching Classroom Music in NSW and QLD for 20 years. He has taught Music at New England Girls' School, The Cathedral School in Townsville, Frensham Girls’ School and whilst teaching class and instrumental music at Fairholme College in Toowoomba, developed an innovative and effective class string-teaching program.
Whilst teaching at various schools, Phil has performed Jazz Violin in various venues such as Darling Harbour, Milton Park, Illawarra Jazz Festival and Thredbo Jazz Festival. He was violinist with Jazz Trio; MIST, based in the Southern Highlands from 1998 until 2001. He has also taught and continues to teach Jazz Strings Workshops for String Teachers and Students.
Currently (2008) Phil is Director of Ensembles at St Paul’s Grammar School, Penrith, teaching Senior School Music and conducting and coordinating ensembles and performance. At the beginning of 2007, Phil was requested by the School to design and implement a very unique and award winning strings program in the Junior School, but also achieving Board of Studies Outcomes in the K-6 Music Curriculum. Phil authored a unique text and backing CD and currently teaches the whole of Yr 4 in semester 1 and the whole of Yr 3 in semester 2. The program has been widely acclaimed, winning a commendation in the FLAME music education awards and at the time of writing, Phil is currently a finalist for the Golden Fiddle Awards “Best Teacher” category for 2008.
Phil is also available for Strings & Composition workshops, master-classes and in-service courses for teachers. He has presented workshops through QLD, NSW & Victoria – “Jazz Strings – improvising for string teachers & students” “Large Group” strings workshops for up to 50 students, Ensemble Workshops and innovative improvisation and “Composing to Image” workshops and in-service courses.
As well as a Degree in Music Education, Phil also gained a Graduate Diploma in Film& TV Music (Composition & Music Production) from Griffith University. He has his own comprehensive Production Studio, has composed music for TV Documentaries, Short Films and his advice in the use of Music Technology in schools is regularly sought after. |
